In a crowded field of youth soccer programs, TekFlow Training in Tampa takes a distinct approach: using futsal as a primary tool to develop more confident, technical, and intelligent soccer players. We spoke with Raphael Araujo about what sets their program apart and how they measure success.
Why Futsal?
For Araujo, futsal isn't just a variation of soccer—it's an accelerator. "Futsal creates an environment where players are constantly involved in the game," he explains. "The smaller court, reduced space, and faster pace mean players are making decisions every few seconds instead of every few minutes."
This constant engagement leads to more touches on the ball and more game situations solved per session. Araujo is clear that futsal isn't meant to replace outdoor soccer. "At TekFlow, we don't see futsal as a replacement for soccer, we see it as one of the best tools to accelerate a player's overall development." The goal is to produce players who can transfer futsal-honed habits onto the outdoor field—a path that many of the world's best players have followed.
Coaching the Individual in a Group
One of the biggest challenges in youth training is addressing different skill levels within a single session. TekFlow's solution is intentional small-group design. "Small groups allow us to coach the individual without losing the benefits of training in a competitive environment," Araujo says.
Rather than generic drills, they use game-based activities that naturally challenge each player at their current level. "We can adjust space, pressure, rules, or objectives to make sure every athlete is being pushed appropriately." The advanced player solves more complex problems, while the developing player builds confidence through success and better decisions. "Most importantly, every player receives meaningful coaching and feedback throughout the session."
From Drills to Decision-Making
When asked about specific techniques, Araujo emphasizes that isolated drills aren't the focus. "At TekFlow, we don't build sessions around isolated drills, we build them around solving the game." Technical fundamentals like first touch, passing, and finishing are essential, but they only become valuable when players know when, where, and why to use them.
Every session is designed to improve decision-making. "We create realistic game situations that force players to scan before receiving, recognize space, communicate with teammates, and make quick decisions under pressure." Mistakes are part of the learning process, and Araujo encourages players to be brave. "Technical ability gives players options. Decision-making teaches them which option to choose."
When to Start and What to Look For
For parents considering private training, Araujo advises against fixating on a single starting age. "What's more important is that the training matches the child's stage of development." For younger players, the priority should be building confidence, coordination, creativity, and a genuine love for the game. As players get older and more competitive, training should emphasize decision-making, speed of play, tactical understanding, and accountability.
He also warns against being swayed by flashy drills or social media clips. "Ask whether players are actively making decisions, solving problems, and being coached throughout the session." A quality program should have a clear purpose behind every activity and create an environment where players are challenged, supported, and encouraged to grow. "At TekFlow, our focus is long-term player development—not quick results."
Measuring What Matters
Winning tournaments is exciting, but it's not how TekFlow defines success. "We measure progress by the player standing in front of us today compared to the player they were six months ago." Araujo looks for signs like increased confidence on the ball, better decisions under pressure, greater composure, and improved coachability and teamwork. "Those are the improvements that last."
When players consistently develop those qualities, the results usually follow. "Our mission at TekFlow is to help every player become more confident, more technical, more intelligent, and more prepared for whatever level they aspire to reach." If they can also develop a lifelong love for the game, Araujo considers that a job well done.
