When it comes to preparing for the TOEFL, most free practice tests are built with adult test-takers in mind. But what about younger students? That gap is exactly what Sebi, the creator of Test Practice Lab, set out to fill. In this email interview, Sebi shares how he designs practice tests that meet middle and high schoolers where they are, why he keeps everything free, and what he's working on next.
Why Create Custom Practice Tests?
Sebi teaches TOEFL primarily to middle and high schoolers, and he quickly noticed a problem with existing resources. "Most practice tests on the market are built with adult test-takers in mind," he explains. "It's not just the reading level that's the problem — it's the subject matter. A lot of the content assumes a level of real-world knowledge and experience that younger students simply don't have yet."
So he started writing his own iBT TOEFL practice tests, calibrated specifically for that age group. "I still keep the same question formats and writing style TOEFL requires — I'm just building passages around academic topics that are also genuinely interesting for that age group."
Leveling Tests for Accessibility
Many free TOEFL resources only cover advanced material, leaving beginners with few options. Sebi takes a different approach. For his easy-level tests, he asks himself whether a middle schooler could realistically read and follow the passage. "I don't compromise on the structural patterns TOEFL passages typically follow — those stay intact," he says. "Where I have more freedom is in subject matter, so I pull from a wide range of academic fields students tend to find genuinely curious."
His topics range from animal behavior and psychology to neuroscience, military history, and criminology. "The goal is for students to actually enjoy the process of studying English, not just grind through it."
Expanding to Duolingo
Sebi is also planning to add Duolingo practice tests later this year. He notes that the Duolingo English Test doesn't have as long a track record as TOEFL, and many students are frustrated by ambiguous scoring criteria and a lack of practice material. Since Duolingo is an AI-adaptive test, Sebi is approaching it differently. "I'm building it more like an interactive, program-based practice format rather than static reading passages."
Common Student Mistakes
When asked about the biggest mistake students make in the Speaking and Writing sections, Sebi points to a focus on sounding impressive. "Most students come in asking how to sound 'impressive' — reaching for fancier vocabulary," he says. "I see it differently. If your content is specific, well-structured, and your logic holds up without gaps, the impressive language follows naturally."
His approach is to focus on structure and idea generation first. "Vocabulary and expression come after that foundation is in place."
Keeping It Free
For now, Test Practice Lab remains completely free with no sign-up or paywall. Sebi admits he has plans for paid features down the road, but his current priority is clear. "I want my students — and any student who finds the site — studying with better, more age-appropriate material, without a paywall getting in the way."
This philosophy shapes how he releases content, ensuring that new tests are accessible to everyone who needs them.
